the professor!

Tue Sep 8, 2009, 12:19 PM
-Wanted to welcome Shawn Crystal :iconinkpulp: to DA and make sure everyone checks him out, he's a beast and a scholar. Shawns been putting it down in comics for years, currently on a monster run of Deadpool stories, and is also head of the Sequential Art Department at SCAD. Can't stress how much I've learned from him over the years- his consistent quality, constant pursuit of the next level, and an ability to verbalize what he sees with a sharp mind. It's evident in his work and the students who came up under him. Check him out and keep checking, he's got unbelievable range....
- A long overdue recommend as well of the SIDEBAR podcast, hosted by the scholars Dwight and Swain, a show of comic/illustration interviews. They got Tommy Lee Edwards, John Paul Leon, Josh Middleton, Michael Lark among others in the archives, along with the occasional epic, like the Adam Hughes and George Pratt episodes. Dwight and Swain are top at getting into the nitty-gritty, bringing to comics what Terry Gross brings to NPR: searching questions, wide range of knowledge, and a sense of humor.....uh.... they interviewed Rico and I too.....

Thanks for the watch, I've been a big fan of yours for years (since your Hellblazer issue/LDK covers/Gotham Central covers) so having you watch me is pretty cool!

:iconkwakthe1st:
Great gallery mang...
:iconrebekahann:
Hi Chris, I always loved seeing your stuff in the Norris hallways and in J. Lowe's class (he used your work as examples a few times -- very inspiring). Glad to see you on DA. Your work is as incredible as ever!
:iconsynthezoide:
purchased your Legends of the Dark Knight issues a couple of weeks back after listening to SideBar. Really not as bad as you said it was !
Not on the Foreign Parts level but still. Can't wait for Loose Ends, the preview pages I saw are really really cool.
Thanks
:iconkickstandkid78:
thanks for hunting down those issues sir! honored you put in the legwork. my apt building caught fire and destroyed over half of issue 5, re-doing something you've already completed is a distinct kind of torture, so, uh, that prolly accounts for my tone in the interview. lookit all the rain in that issue.....i did that twice! arrrgh! appreciate your patience with Loose Ends, it's on the way....
:iconsynthezoide:
haha, talk about poetic justice. It s almost like life wanted to teach you a lesson about the extra amount of details you were putting in those pages. I was at Baltimore comic con this weekend and on the way back to NY i read the Working Methods book you were a part of. Great stuff, Ive been trying my hand at sequentials lately and I found lots of great tips in this book. Talking to Brian Stelfreeze over there didn't hurt either, I think I got more knowledge from the 20 minutes he talked to me, than from all the people i ever shown my portfolio to !
